United Arab Emirates implemented excise tax in October 2017 as per the GCC common agreement on the Excise Tax.
The excise tax is applicable on sweetened drinks, energy drinks, carbonated drinks & tobacco products
The Excise Tax has been implemented in UAE since 1st October 2017 based on the GCC common agreement on Excise Tax. It is applicable on mostly sugary/carbonated drinks & tobacco products with different rates.
Excise Tax is applicable on the importers, producers, stockpilers & warehouse keepers of excisable goods as per the following rates
- Tobacco and tobacco products – 100%
- Liquids used in electronic smoking devices and tools – 100%
- Electronic smoking devices and tools – 100%
- Carbonated drinks – 50%
- Energy drinks – 100%
- Sweetened drinks – 50%
The excise tax rate is applicable on retail sale price of the goods (valuation to charge tax). Also, the digital stamp on excisable goods has been implemented in UAE.
